Context And Mission This position will be hosted by the Climate Variability and Change group within BSC’s Earth Science Department.
This work will contribute to the European Commission Horizon Europe project EXPECT, an international project to develop integrated prediction and attribution of regional climate changes including extremes Key Duties Adjust and apply existing data-driven tools for seasonal climate prediction Evaluate predictability and feature importance in climate models compared to observational data Prepare a Master Thesis based on the research results Requirements Education Having a degree in climate Science, Meteorology, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a related discipline Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience Excellent coding skills in R, Python Experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash,...) Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience Experience of version control in a distributed team, including SVN or Git will be valued Previous experience in a scientific area related to the research position, in particular climate analysis or modeling will be valued Previous experience in HPC architectures and parallel programming (multi-threaded applications) will be valued Fluency in English Competences Good written and verbal communication skills Ability to take initiatives prioritize tasks and work under set deadlines Conditions We are offering a research internship over approximately 5 months (with the possibility of a part-time contract).
In the position the successful applicant will apply data-driven tools to analyse seasonal predictability of heat extremes, and the feature importance identified by the Machine-Learning based model, in observations and numerical climate model experiments.
The goal is to evaluate the predictability and representation of relevant processes in climate models compared to observations.
