Context And Mission The methodologies underlying aircraft design systems play a crucial role in determining the cost, time-to-market, and the ability to achieve design objectives, especially in minimizing environmental impacts and operational costs.
Robust computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been instrumental in advancing cost-effective processes and designs, addressing challenges like the reduction of carbon footprint and noise impacts.
Despite progress, the industry still faces obstacles.
In response, emerging technologies and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) are swiftly becoming crucial tools for advancing and accelerating industrial processes, with AI development supported by the Government of Spain through the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (ENIA).
DeepCraft(PIDOB-C21) operates at the intersection of high-fidelity simulations and cutting-edge data-driven technologies, aiming to address societal challenges in AI and smart mobility.
Its mission is to investigate and achieve a proof of concept for AI-based frameworks in aeronautical application challenge cases.
Special attention is given to the validation of developed AI-based methodologies to build trust in the emerging AI field.
DeepCraft focuses on providing disruptive proof of concept for AI/ML tools, enhancing the robustness, speed, and accuracy of aircraft design processes.
Notable proof of concept cases include.
(i) Rigorous validation & verification procedures of all the tools, flow solvers and methods developed in DeepCraft (ii)Advancement in aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, including turbulence modelling by carefully chosen test and application cases that include all relevant flight conditions for training and implementation (iii)Multi-disciplinary high-fidelity design optimisation for advanced aerodynamic performance.
This approach will result in innovative numerical strategies for high-fidelity simulations of turbulent and, in some cases, transonic flows and shape optimization.
By leveraging AIs potential to improve the sustainability, competitiveness, and safety in the aeronautical industry, this will yield increased accuracy by an expected 10% for key quantities related to flow separation (e.
.
lift and drag coefficients).
There is also potential for the industry to predict 90% of critical flow conditions at the flight envelope borders correctly.
To achieve the project's ambitious scope, the PhD candidate integrated in the Large-Scale Computational Fluids Dynamics group of Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the Turbulence and Aerodynamics Research Group from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya will collaborate and leverage their complementary strengths to ensure the project's success, participating in most of the activities of DeepCraft.
Key Duties To develop ML methods to accelerate CFD solvers To validate the developed algorthms in relevant aeronautical test cases To participate in the rest of the CFD activities of the LS/CFD team in CASE.
Requirements Education MSc in computational fluid dynamics Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience Experience in CFD development (at least 3 years) Knowledge in large eddy simulation models (at least 3 years) Experience in large-scale simulation at high speed (wall models for LES, complex mesh generation, industrial simulations, etc.) (at least 3 years) Understanding of HPC clusters at a user level and experience programming MPI (at least 3 years).
Good programming level (python, C, Fortran, C++, etc.) (at least 4 years) Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience Good writing and oral skills (English is a must) Competences CFD development knowledge Experience in large-scale CFD computations (meshing, running in HPC systems and post-processing large data sets) Turbulence modelling (LES and RANS modelling, including wall modelling) Experience in European projects Conditions The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department We offer a full-time contract (37.
