About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain.

Context And Mission The Computational Social Science and Humanities program envisions preparing the social sciences and humanities for the era of data, artificial intelligence (AI), and Exascale supercomputing.
Our mission is to foster collaboration between social scientists and computer scientists, making high-performance computing (HPC) accessible to all researchers in the field.
Through innovative approaches, we aim to apply social science research to contribute valuable insights for informed policymaking.
In our pursuit, we focus on a wide range of key societal research areas such as Population and Household changes, Democratic Quality, Social Media, Public Opinion and Political Communication, Equity and Welfare in Education and Labor Market, legal systems and Legislation, Social-Ecology, Science of Science, and History, Archeology and Cultural Heritage.
Employing a mixed of advanced statistical models, AI/Machine Learning, Large Language Models (LLMs), Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), Social Network Analysis (SNA), high-performance computational methods are applied to a wide range of large datasets from official statistics, surveys, social media, news, laws, historical archives, current data archives, archaeology data, citizens' volunteered and web-scraping data, and public administration and industry data.
We are searching for an excellent researcher with a PhD in Computer Science, Remote Sensing, Mathematics, Physics, Geospatial Analyses, Geosciences, Telecommunications or similar field interested in conducting research in archaeological sites detection based on applying machine learning techniques on satellite images.
The candidate will be involved in projects investigating novel Machine Learning algorithms to automatically detect archaeological sites from the information available on data provided by different and complementary satellite sensors.
The candidate will report directly to Dr.
Hèctor A.
Orengo, and ultimately to Dr Mercè Crosas, Head of the Computational Social Science and Humanities Program at BSC.
This position has a clear research transfer and deployment profile.
Based on previous results in the topic of archaeological site detection (Orengo et al.
, https://doi.
rg//pnas.), new developments will update previous research with Machine Learning techniques, new sources of information, more scenarios and exhaustive validation.
It will also be deployed in cloud infrastructures to disseminate these new tools among the archaeological community.
Key Duties Review the relevant literature and related works.
Design and implement an automatic detection system to process efficiently big volumes of multispectral images.
This includes developing a web-based front-end to download and manage the data to be processed and conceiving back-end algorithms to automatically extract information from the data using high performance computing resources.
Lead and coordinate the dissemination of the project results, including writing submissions to top journals and conferences.
Write deliverables and technical reports.
Engage with collaborators, participate in research discussions, and contribute with new ideas.
Participate in training activities.
Requirements Education PhD in Computer Science, Remote Sensing, Mathematics, Physics, Geospatial Analyses, Geosciences, Telecommunications, or any other relevant field related to remote sensing, spatial and temporal statistical analysis and Machine Learning.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience Experience in applied remote sensing, involving multi/hyperspectral image processing, supervised and unsupervised classifiers.
Knowledge of geostatistical analyses.
Excellent writing and communication skills in English.
Excellent programming skills in Python.
Experience in web programming and app development.
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience Excellent publication record in top journals (assessment relative to the candidate’s career stage).
Two or more years of experience in public or private applied research.
Experience in technology transfer, industrial research and/or research projects with both academic and industrial partners.
Programming experience in R.
Programming experience in Google Earth Engine.
Programming experience in GIS applications (ESRI ArcMap suite and QGIS).
Experience in the preparation of research proposals for funding agencies and writing technical reports.
