November The Scientific IT Research Activities and Knowledge research group (SciTrack) at CIEMAT and the Modelling, Numerical Simulation, and Industrial Mathematics research group (SCALA) at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) are involved in several projects connected to Computational Sciences and Linear Numerical Algebra developments.
In particular, they share a common interest in the efficient solving of very large-scale scientific problems (many driven by, but not limited to, partial differential equations) by applying recent, promising ideas around the ‘randomization’ concept.
Randomization-based approaches permit to reformulate some state-of-the-art algebraic ‘machinery’ (e.
., matrix factorizations as SVD or QR) to be applied as a standalone or as part of advanced analysis algorithms (e.
., PCA, POD, or DMD) of widespread use in Fluid Dynamics and Machine Learning, to cite some.
Recent research reveals that amazing benefits may occur when they are used in combination with a high-end supercomputer, then outperforming their deterministic counterparts at extreme scale.
The underlying fine algorithmic development and parallel programming, together with the integration into an analysis tool and the application to a relevant problem, are key parts of this endeavour.
As a result, the exploration and implementation of these novel algebraic ideas imply the close exploitation of supercomputing resources, which are accessible in both groups at national level and abroad, as well as thanks to the participation in related European projects.
Also, the successful candidate will be involved in national and European initiatives.
