Context And Mission The Earth Science department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center searches for one junior developer willing to work on the implementation of an operational climate service based on current research prototypes already developed in the framework of S2S4E projects.
The successful candidate will support the developments to set up this system, port it to Earth IT infrastructure (to HPC if needed) and employing different and state-of-the-art technologies of data management, post-processing and software development.
Furthermore, this position will be part of the Computational Earth Sciences group dealing with many other IT profiles and interacting with the Earth System Services group.
Key Duties Join the team in charge of developing the tool Maintain the operational deployment on different HPC platforms(if needed) Participate in the data management of the operational forecast system Support the users inside and outside the center by adding new features Participate actively in the extension of the Decision Support tool Explore solutions to integrate seasonal predictions in an operational real-time forecast system Interact with Computational Earth Sciences scientists to improve the performance and reliability of the system.
This includes communication with HPC user support at BSC Interact with climate scientists to understand processes and model configuration Requirements Education Having a Bachelor in Computer Science, Physics or related discipline.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience Good development skills in python and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash, …) will be valued Good experience with object-oriented programming Experience on Web Interfaces or interactive Dashboards will be valued Experience in Earth System models will be appreciated Experience in Earth Sciences file types (NetCDF, GRIB, HDF…), tools (CDO, NCO…) and managing large volumes of data will be appreciated Keen to learn on how to develop scientific applications on parallel computers Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience Previous experience in a scientific area related to the research position will be appreciated Competences Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both earth and computer scientists(internal and external) Proactive attitude and motivation to improve already existing solutions Fluency in English Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure Ability to work both independently and within a team Motivation to work in an international and interdisciplinary working environment Conditions The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department We offer a full-time contract (37.
