About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain.

Context And Mission CASE department mission is to develop scientific and engineering software to efficiently exploit super-computing capabilities (biomedical, geophysics, atmospheric, energy, social and economic simulations).
The position is for the Physical and Numerical Modelling (PNM) group of this department.
On one hand, the group engages in both transversal and vertical (applied) activities.
We are primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of the Alya multi-physics and high-performance computing simulation code.
On the other hand, a major focus of our applied research is the biomedical sector.
This includes the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the cerebro-spinal fluid system, arterial system, women's health, and intervertebral discs.
In recent years, we have developed models and simulations related to the respiratory system, concentrating on drug delivery and pollutant transport.
Our projects have included outdoor simulations for studying virus propagation, drug delivery in the nostrils and small airways, lung airflow for drug delivery and pollutant absorption, particle-mucus interactions for drug absorption, alveoli simulations for bacteria propagation, coupling with intracellular cell signalling to describe infection evolution, and transport in mucus for bacteriophage therapy.
The position focuses on advancing the understanding of drug delivery and pollutant behavior in the respiratory system through the simulation of complex multiphysics and multiscale phenomena.
It requires advanced knowledge of respiratory system physiology, physical modeling of multiscale phenomena, and numerical methods.
The selected candidate will be responsible for developing and conducting research in the biomechanisms and aerosol dynamics in the respiratory systems that need to be considered to build the next-generation virtual human whole-lung models.
With whole-lung modeling strategies, the lung particle dynamics during the full inhalation-exhalation cycles can be predicted without ad-hoc simplifications.
Thus, it is necessary to simulate drug particle, virus, bacteria or pollutants transport and deposition in a domain covering the entire conducting and respiratory zones.
In terms of physical modeling, airflow is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations.
Fluid-structure interactions, such as tissue deformation when studying alveoli, must be considered.
Drugs and pollutants are modeled as Lagrangian or semi-Lagrangian particles.
These particles interact with the mucus layer, exhibiting behaviors such as bouncing (for solid particles) or splashing and spreading (for liquid particles).
Once deposited, the particles may be absorbed by the mucus layer, and their transport within it must be simulated until they reach the bloodstream.
Regarding numerical methods, all simulations are performed in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment.
The numerical implementation in Alya must meet high HPC standards to ensure efficiency both at the parallel and node levels.
This includes solving fluid and solid equations, particle transport, and considering multiscale interactions from large airways to alveoli and the mucus layer.
To fully utilize numerical resources at the node level, specific runtime techniques must be implemented.
Part of this work will be conducted in collaboration with the Computer Science department.
The simulation of such complex phenomena is costly in terms of computing time, especially if we consider a virtual population study, to evaluate inter-subject variability studies, where thousands of simulations may be required.
Machine learning techniques are powerful tools to mitigate such a cost.
In the case of a virtual population, the number of required simulation can be drastically decreased to train a model to predict the main biomarkers of interest (pressure drop, deposition map, etc).
ML techniques can also be employed to generate such a virtual population, reducing the need for real patient geometries.

Proficiency in Spanish and other European languages would be advantageous.
Proficiency in computational modelling and simulation techniques, particularly in multi-scale and multi-physics frameworks.
Previous experience in leading research projects.
Experience in managing research teams, promoting a collaborative and productive work environment.
Competences Ability to work in a team and in a multi-cultural environment.
Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment, collaborating with clinicians, experimentalists, and other researchers.
Ability to supervise and mentor students, fostering their development and ensuring effective project contributions.
Strong written and oral communication skills for preparing reports, scientific papers, and presentations.
